I am a big fan of technology and love all the advances in it since its mass mainstream adoption in the 90s. Technology is often used for the wrong things. I recently watched a TV programme called Computer Says No on BBC One in the UK. It featured how AI is being used in recruitment to hire people. There are a limited number of jobs available and thousands applying for the same job. The solution is to use technology to process the applications and reduce the numbers.
The presenter of the show used to be in recruitment himself until he became a journalist. His first test was to run his CV through an online checker. The checker highlighted the mistakes in it. He made some changes, added some buzzwords and he did score better. This is only the first hurdle. Would this technology pass people with a score of more than 90%?
The show features people who had to attend a video interview with their employer. The videos are a series of short questions. You have a little time to prepare your answer, which you have to record. This is then uploaded to the server and analysed by Artificial Intelligence. The AI monitors your eye contact and speech and checks for any repeated words. The people featured were actually made redundant and lost their job. They used technology to fire people and didn’t tell them!
Now imagine if you are on the Autistic Spectrum. You find it difficult to maintain eye contact or you feel intimidated in social settings. This technology is amazing but it’s filtering out lots of very important people that are able. There has to be a way to make it fair for everybody. To not discriminate against those who have communication difficulties or are neurodiverse. I find it quite sad.
A website footer is underrated. Yes, It can contain secondary navigation, copyright info, social links and terms and conditions etc. The article, 5 must-have elements of a successful footer gives you ideas on what else should be in a footer and just how valuable it can be.
Accessibility is a very important part of the web design process that can be often forgotten about. In this beginner’s guide to building for the accessible web, you will find lots of useful information to make your site compliant.
Java is a programming language developed by Sun Microsystems in the 90s. Java uses object-orientated classes to provide its structure. It has an easier learning curve when compared to languages such as C++. Take a peek at the top 10 things to learn about Java’s evolution since its creation back in the day.
Fast forward to 2022 and Kotlin is becoming popular as it can run on the Java Virtual Machine (JVM). The software company JetBrains, known for its IDEs, created and currently develops Kotlin. It has a wide variety of uses including Cross-platform, Mobile development, managing servers, front-end web and data science. Try the getting started with Kotlin guide on the JetBrains website.
