# Cloud Security, Architecture and Linux Learning- August 2026

Published on September 9, 2026 by Tracy Ridge in [Web Development](https://worldoweb.co.uk/category/category:Web%20Development)

Welcome to Hot Web Dev August 2026, featuring the latest in web development. August's version is a little late as my mother passed away after a short, but brave battle with cancer. This month features cloud security, software architecture patterns, new JavaScript API and an open source kanban application to improve your productivity.

Table of contents:

1. [Cloud Security](#one)
2. [Coding Resources](#two)
3. [Learning Resources](#three)
4. [WOW Tool Of The Month](#four)
5. [Must-Read Resources From August 2026](#five)

## Cloud Security

Continuous monitoring is essential for cloud security due to the risks posed by misconfigured resources and fragmented visibility. Cloud security posture management helps organisations identify vulnerabilities, maintain compliance, and respond to risks proactively.

Cloud computing has revolutionised how organisations develop, deploy and scale applications. Businesses can quickly launch new services, expand into new markets and cut down on the cost of maintaining physical infrastructure.

While these benefits have spurred quick cloud adoption, they have also brought new security challenges that many organisations do not realise until it is too late.

Unlike traditional data centres, cloud environments are constantly changing. New virtual machines, databases, storage accounts, containers and serverless functions can pop up and disappear throughout the day.

As cloud infrastructure expands, so do the potential security holes. Many of these vulnerabilities remain hidden because they stem from configuration errors rather than software flaws.

This is where cloud security posture management becomes crucial. Instead of just doing security reviews every now and then, organisations can keep a close eye on their cloud environments, spot risks and fix issues before they turn into security incidents.

## Coding Resources

Choosing a software architecture pattern involves balancing trade-offs against constraints like deployment cadence, team topology, and failure tolerance. While layered, microservices, and event-driven architectures are common, the pattern name matters less than the constraint it solves for, such as team size, request latency, and deployment frequency. The decision matrix for choosing between monolithic and microservices architecture considers team size, latency budget, and change frequency, with microservices favouring larger teams, asynchronous workflows, and high-churn domains.

Cloud automation can lead to rapid deployment of both good and bad boundaries. Event-driven architecture and distributed systems patterns, like the saga pattern and circuit breaker pattern, enhance resilience in microservices. Serverless architecture offers cost savings for low-traffic workloads but introduces cold-start latency, making it less suitable for latency-sensitive applications.

Temporal, a new date and time API, is now a permanent part of [JavaScript](https://www.worldoweb.co.uk/tag/tag:JavaScript). It addresses common issues with the Date object, such as mutability and timezone handling, by introducing purpose-built types like Temporal, Instant and Temporal.ZonedDateTime. While browser support is growing, it’s not yet universal, so developers should consider using polyfills for broader compatibility.

## Learning Resources

Want to learn [Linux](https://www.worldoweb.co.uk/category/category:Linux), Docker and Kubernetes without having to fire up a virtual machine? [Stage 1](https://devops-daily.com/games/linux-terminal) focuses on mastering the shell, [Stage 2](https://devops-daily.com/games/docker-terminal-simulator) covers Docker’s CLI, and [Stage 3](https://devops-daily.com/games/kubernetes-terminal-simulator) introduces Kubernetes with kubectl. Each stage builds on the previous one, reusing familiar concepts and commands, and the simulators provide a consequence-free environment for drilling until commands become automatic.

Docker Compose simplifies managing multi-container applications by defining services, volumes, ports, and dependencies in a single compose.yaml file. It streamlines the process of running complex setups, such as a Node app with a Postgres database, by automating networking, configuration, and service dependencies. Compose also offers features like bind mounts for development, environment variable interpolation, and the ability to override configurations for different environments.

## WOW Tool of the Month

[Plynk](https://github.com/TrisH0x2A/plynk) is a local-first Kanban and whiteboard desktop application for developers and power users. It features a high-contrast monochrome design, fluid drag-and-drop, a status and label system, and a vector whiteboard canvas. Plynk prioritises privacy with zero network access and telemetry. Layer Technologies’ desktop core uses Tauri v2 (Rust 2021) with an embedded SQLite database. The frontend is built with React 18, TypeScript, and Vite, utilising TanStack React Query and Zustand for state management.
