With lockdown and schools shut for the foreseeable future, along with several jobs and businesses, myself, other students and various workers/business owners find ourselves with a lot of free time. So much free time that I’d say we have no idea what to do with it. So, before we all get bored and begin to go crazy, here are a few things we could do to try and mitigate the boredom and still manage to learn a new skill.

Many years ago web designers were limited to JavaScript when adding functionality to web sites. This was before the official release of HTML5 and CSS3. JS added oomph to any website, making it more appealing and sexy. If the user disabled JS in the browser then web sites had to be functional without it.

VS Code has become popular since its initial release in 2015. Released 1 year after Adobe Brackets and a year before Atom. The battle of the text editors began to rival Commercial software Sublime Text. VS Code was designed to be a next-generation Code editor built on top of the Electron Framework. Its lightweight functionality and its extensible features make it fully compatible with the majority of programming languages. Microsoft has also made it cross-platform so it supports Windows, Mac, and Linux. It can even run as a portable app.

This is for all the individuals who have a WordPress website. Yes, your site is up and running along with a beautiful and well-crafted design. Still, you would need SEO to secure a proper ranking as well as to make the site work at full pace. You need traffic more than anything, so you need your page to rank higher in the search results; thus, you need SEO.

In this penultimate year of the decade, there are lost to know and do in web design especially when the internet has undergone such dramatic changes in the past couple of years. Expectations of the users, business owners and shareholders have also changed at an equally rapid pace. Therefore, as a web designer, you will need to know the current as well as the upcoming trends in web design and deliver just as your clients want.

As a business owner, you should never allow yourself to rest on your laurels. You should always be prepared to change, improve, and step things up a notch with regards to your organisation and its day-to-day processes. Quite simply, you should forever be looking for ways to take your company to the next level.

In this edition of a trip down memory lane series, we feature the comparison of Web Design from 2008 to 2018. Web design has evolved greatly over this period of time. Introducing new technologies, improved specifications and browsers becoming more consistent resulting in having to use fewer hacks. However, browser wars are still here to stay but who will be on top next year!

Wow, Worldoweb turns 10. Many things have happened in the last 10 years. We have seen Apple, Amazon and Google dominate the technology field. The annoyance of subscription models to in-app purchases becoming the firm favourite to drain anyone’s bank account. I hope you enjoy reading part 1 of this series of WOW’s trip down memory lane where we compare worldoweb from 2008 to now in 2018.

During spring, I decided to give WOW a little overhaul and create a new WordPress theme. I previously used bootstrap 3, which at the time was very stable. During the development stage, I could upgrade to Bootstrap 4 or change to another framework. Having looked at several options I opted to choose Bulma, a fast-growing lightweight CSS framework. Here are my findings.

It’s not uncommon to come across an infographic while browsing on the web. They are everywhere and we can see why— they make data and statistics look more appealing and easy to understand. According to a study by Hubspot, infographics are three times more likely to be shared than any other type of content. If you’re looking to generate traffic and leads, it’s ideal to invest in them.

When it comes to open-source code editors we are spoilt for choice. Do you go for Brackets, Atom or Visual Studio Code editors as an alternative to using a paid-for software? Do you install all and use them for different projects? Here is a list of extensions to install on Visual Studio Code, Atom and Brackets. These extensions will enhance the use of your code editor making you super productive.

Earlier this year I revamped my WordPress website using Bulma, a CSS Flexbox Framework. I tested a few Navwalkers to integrate the WordPress Nav Menus into the Bulma Navigation. Although they worked they didn’t support Font Awesome. I embarked on creating my own Bulma Navwalker with inspiration from my previous Bootstrap Navwalker and GiottoPress.
