This particular edition should be renamed to fortnightly as last week I devoted time to having a good clear out (home wise) and spending time with my children during the first week of their school holidays. It’s been another busy week in tech with Google finally becoming part of Alphabet, Apple releasing El Capitan for the Mac and another minor update for iOS 9, a XOR Trojan threatens Linux servers and a popular ad blocker is sold to a mystery buyer. As always we have our tool of the week and new releases in brief.

After 7 years of using feedburner I have finally decided to switch. Google haven’t yet killed off feedburner entirely but having announced that they are no longer going to support or update it. Like many people who are flocking to alternatives I thought I would jump on the bandwagon. Obviously switching to something new can be quite problematic and true I did encounter a couple of problems and here is how I solved them.

Ampps is a fantastic piece of software if you want to run a testing server but upgrading on the mac has always been pretty awkward. The first time I upgraded, back when I was a Mac newbie, I deleted all of my files by accident! Luckily I had created a backup first. The good news is Mac users can download and install the update from a compressed file so there is no need to install from the disk image again.
